Why your card is declined

You sign up for ChatGPT, use it for a week, and decide the paid plan is worth it. You click "Upgrade", enter your card, and the payment fails. The same happens with Claude.

You did nothing wrong. Most cards issued by Ethiopian banks are made for use inside Ethiopia. A ChatGPT or Claude subscription is billed by a foreign company in US dollars, and an ordinary Birr debit card cannot make that payment.
